How to Really Play the Harp from a Fake Book

This 51 page book first teaches you the essential music theory that you need to know including the order of flats and sharps, key signatures, and how to play all the different types of chords without a chord dictionary. 

Then I teach you my eight Schanie Pattern Positions and my Schanie Pattern Notation that will have you playing chords with four fingers (three fingers and a thumb of course) in each hand without having to know all the notes in the chord!  These Schanie Pattern Positions will also have you playing hand over hand arpeggios up and down the harp in any key with four fingers, again without having to know all the notes in the arpeggio!  My Schanie Pattern Notation can also be used in advanced harp music, especially brook type songs, to simplify reading and memorization.

Then I teach you step by step how to play songs from a fake book using four fingers in the RIGHT HAND using my Schanie Pattern Positions.  I give you the formulas to determine the Schanie Pattern Positions and take you through a complete working example so you will be able to easily do this with other songs.

Morning Gliss - A song with true glissandos for Lever and Pedal Harp

One of the things that always bothered me with the lever harp was that the glissandos were never like those of the pedal harp.  This is because on the pedal harp one can make the two or three string changes required for the glissando, over the entire harp very quickly using the pedals, and then change them back just as quick.  This is just not possible on the lever harp, so most of the glissandos on the lever harp are usually scale glissandos that do not sound the best.

Looking at all of the pedal harp glissandos, I found five different ones that can be played on a lever harp.  After I set the lever harp to one of these glissandos and started playing the notes, I heard Grieg's Morning Song, and discovered that it could be played in each of the five glissando settings.  From there, I worked out how to move from one glissando to another with only one set of lever changes.  After that, I set up a progression to move through all of the glissandos.  In all of the glissando sets except one, I wrote Grieg's Morning Song melody with a left hand accompaniment, and then I added a few measures of music that I wrote.  In one of the glissando sets, I did not use the Morning Song melody because although the glissando was different, the Morning song melody was played on the same notes, so I wrote an entirely different melody.

This song can be played on a lever harp with at least 33 strings from 6th octave C to 1st octave G as well as a pedal harp.  Lever and pedal changes are included for both harps.


Smithgall Serenade - Solo, Duet, Trio, or Quartet

Smithgall Serenade is a pedal harp solo or it can be played with up to three additional pedal or lever harps.  It contains the score, pedal harp 1, harp 2, harp 3, and harp 4.  Harp part 1 contains pedal harp markings, and harp parts 2, 3, and 4 contain markings for both pedal and lever harp.  It can be played as a solo, duet, trio, or quartet.  It is dedicated to HarpArts adult study retreat and Smithgall Woods in Helen, GA where HarpArts is held each year.
